A day on set.

Set life

Bonjour!

So after my very popular post about merchandise and where to buy it I went to twitter to ask what other posts people would like to see on this blog. One of the most asked for was a post describing a day of filming and what happens. Now before I start I'm just going to let you know that it is not as exciting and you may expect. There is a lot of waiting around, seeing and doing nothing and being very cold! Also this is describing a day in Steveston filming and not other locations. Other locations where they are filming are similar situations but not exactly the same.

Where to find out about filming

I mostly find out all the filming via Facebook and twitter. For Steveston days the Real Storybrooke page on Facebook usually announces when the crew and cast will be coming in to film. Twitter is where I find my info out about other locations just by searching for filming notices that people put up.

Life kit on set

First things first make sure you are completely prepared for a day on set. Most set days start from 9am or earlier till around 9pm depending on what needs to be filmed. Here are a few things you need to bring.

.Be prepared for all weather - It may look sunny on the day but don't be fooled. Make sure to bring layers because even on a warm summers day it will get chilly on the evening by the water. Also perhaps bring a blanket and umbrella as back up.

.Bring snacks - There are lot of places to eat in Steveston but when you watching something being filmed you feel more than inclined to stay in case of missing something. I always bring lots of snacks to keep me going through out the day because I always get hungry! Also bring a drink because staying hydrated is a must!

.Bring a fully charged camera, merchandise, etc - If you like taking photographs while on set it is key to have a full battery. You don't want your camera dying before the final scene of the day. Also always bring anything you want to be signed because you never know who may come over and say hello. I always say bring your things with you because I know from first hand how much you will kick yourself if you miss meeting someone and not having something signed because you decided not to bring it that day.

.Make friends - For most days on set there will be a long wait before you see anything happening so getting to know people around you is encouraged. All the fans are here for the same thing, their love for the show. Most people on set are very friendly and are happy to talk to you about the show and the cast.  Also some of these people could become very close friends off set which is always a lovely bonus!

Early morning start!

7:30 am - Wake up time, get ready, pack bag
8:30 am - Head out to Steveston (will differ based on where you are travelling from)
9:30 am - I always aim to arrive at this time so I don't miss any filming
10/10:30 am - Will start filming if everything is running on time

Piece of advise! Always listen to the PA's & crew members. By working with them and doing as you are told you will be rewarded by being nearer to filming and also putting everyone on set in a good mood. Also when they say rolling you must stay silent! If they can hear you in the noise van you will be pushed further up the street which means not seeing anything and less likely chance cast members will come over.

A day of filming really does differ each time so when it comes down to scenes and how long they are filmed for I can't really be specific. Some scenes can take up to 4 hours, some as little as 1 hour. Also be prepared to keep getting moved. They like to be multiple shots from different view points so the fans usually get moved from one side of the street to the other.
They will usually film for around 6/7 hours before wrapping for lunch. They usually have an hour for lunch which gives you chance to get some grub also! I always recommend Dave's fish and chips because its quick service and yummy food. Also during this hour is a good time to get photographs of Steveston dressed up for Storybrooke. The Storybrooke signs are only up for 2 days while filming so its best to get them done on the day!

There isn't much to say about filming except for just enjoy the whole experience. Watching filming is the most bizarre thing ever. You see how they create these scenes and then going home to watch it on TV when it all comes together is amazing. So many crew members are needed to create this show and without any of them it wouldn't be as amazing as it is. Even the small things you may not ever consider plays such a big role to the final project. Respect all the crew and cast members because they are all so awesome and hardworking.

And last but not least meeting cast members

Lets be real everyone comes to set in hopes of perhaps meeting some of their favorite stars from the show. We all do it and when it happens its the most amazing experience ever. They don't always come over so don't expect anything from them. They are working and are not here for fun so if they do decide to come and meet the fans be respectful and appreciative. The cast are so friendly and lovely and deserve all our love!

  4. I've been to multiple fillings too and I have one piece of advice. They will film the same dialogue scene over and over. They may do the same little bit again and again for hours. I can't say how many times I've heard people around me get annoyed that they keep doing the same thing. They only film about 3 scenes per day.

  5. Thanks for the info. Do you have any idea how many days in advance filming is announced? We will be driving up from San Francisco and can only do about 5 hours a day. I think I figure it will take us about 6 days to get up there. Driving with a wheelchair and service dog takes a while. We can't do this until the beginning of August. It's my daughter's dream vacation. I really hope we can see a little bit of filming!

    1. Hey! Glad you enjoyed the post. Usually for filming in Steveston we can find out between a week and as little as 4 days before. We find out the info based on when the crew let the neighborhood know and the filming notices go out. However there has been occasions when we have found out quite early but that is just from getting the info from https://www.facebook.com/RealStorybrooke/ hopefully this has helped a little & I really do hope you get chance to see some filming for the show :)
